The Details

2:00pm | Depart Christchurch: 

Board the train for a scenic and relaxing ride from Christchurch to Kaikōura. Enjoy a snack platter and light entrée served onboard as you take in the stunning views of New Zealand’s countryside. 

5:00pm | Arrive in Kaikōura: 

The sun sets at 5:01pm, providing the perfect timing for stargazing. Step off the train into the cool evening air, and prepare to witness the beauty of the night sky as it comes alive with stars. 

Transport to Fyffe House: 

A Kaikōura Shuttle will transport you from the train station to Fyffe House (just a 10-minute drive), where the star-gazing event will begin. 

On the Lawns of Fyffe House: 

Enjoy the breathtaking surroundings as five telescopes are set up for your viewing pleasure. One telescope even allows up to 10 people to view the stars via Bluetooth connection on their smartphones. Stay warm by the fire pits as you sip on hot chocolate, tea, or coffee served at picnic tables. 

Guided Stargazing: 

The Dark Sky Trust volunteers will lead you in exploring the stars, pointing out constellations, and sharing the significance of Matariki

Fyffe House Store: 

Explore the Fyffe House store, featuring local crafts and Matariki-themed products, adding a special touch to your evening. 

 

If the weather turns unfavorable, the event will be held at the Kaikōura Museum, where large-scale sky projections, Matariki stories, and hot drinks will create a magical indoor experience.
