An enriching experience
Step back in time to the 19th-century where gold-mining was all the rage and West Coast settlements were bustling with entrepreneurs. Shantytown is an experience like no other! Panning for gold
Try your luck at discovering your own golden nugget in the ponds. With a pan in hand, listen to the skilled tutor as the stones roll back and forth, uncovering possible treasure!
During this exciting experience, watch a live sluice gun demonstration. A sluice gun is a fascinating tool used in the process of gold mining. It can be described as a powerful instrument that exudes an aura of adventure and excitement. With its long, slender body and shiny metal exterior, the sluice gun looks like a futuristic weapon straight out of a science fiction movie. When in use, the sluice gun unleashes a powerful jet of water that blasts away dirt and debris, revealing the precious minerals hidden underneath. Its forceful stream creates a mesmerising spectacle as it propels gravel and rocks with impressive velocity, adding to the thrill and excitement of the gold-mining process.
Choo-Choo!
Chug through Shantytown with an 1877 'L' class, an 1896 'improved F' class (Kaitangata) or a 1957 'TR' class shunting locomotive. This adventure aboard the steam train will be a memorable affair.
Embark on a thrilling 1.5 km journey as it winds its way to a scenic photo stop at the end of the line. Here, you'll be immersed in the fascinating history of saw-milling in the area and may even catch a glimpse of the quirky and adorable weka - a native, flightless bird unique to New Zealand.
But the excitement doesn't end there! On the return trip, you will make a stop at the Infants Creek Sawmill where you'll disembark for a short yet exhilarating bushwalk to the gold claim and sluice area. Prepare to be dazzled by the mighty sluice gun as it unleashes a torrent of water, blasting away at the cliff face and sending gold-bearing gravel flying in all directions. You'll follow the water races onward where the expert gold mining team will guide and tutor you in the art of finding your very own precious gold. Once you've struck gold (guaranteed!), a short bushwalk will have you back in the heart of the town, eager to share your incredible adventure with friends and family.
